Who We Are: A Story of Passion and Resistance

At the heart of Nairobi’s bustling creative scene stands a small but fearless collective—Chisaina Arts. Born not out of comfort, but out of urgency. Not for the sake of entertainment, but as an act of resistance, reclamation, and restoration.

We began in 2021—not with grand funding or recognition—but with late-night rehearsals in borrowed halls, scripts scribbled on notebook paper, and hearts brimming with purpose. Our founders didn’t just want to act. They wanted to amplify voices, confront injustice, and craft narratives that dared to challenge Kenya’s cultural, social, and political boundaries.

Every performance became more than just theatre—it became testimony. From the stinging satire of The Cougar to the haunting biopic Beyond Silence: JM Kariuki Chronicles, our productions are stitched with courage. Courage to ask uncomfortable questions. Courage to provoke reflection. Courage to speak truth to power

But Chisaina Arts isn’t just a theatre group. It’s a sanctuary.

Emerging artists come here not just to perform, but to belong. To be mentored, challenged, and celebrated. Our culture is one of radical support—where no dream is too naive, and no voice too small.

We teach. We guide. We celebrate wins—big and small. Because every artist is an activist in their own right. Every story they carry is a bridge to healing, understanding, and change.

In a world overwhelmed by noise, we choose storytelling. Not always clean. Not always comfortable. But honest.

  • When we tackled teenage pregnancy in The Bitter Fruit, we asked parents to listen more deeply.
  • When Shadows of the Cloth exposed spiritual hypocrisy, we stirred conversation in congregations across Nairobi.
  • And when Education Is a Padlock debuts this July, we’ll confront systemic barriers faced by youth with nothing but a stage and raw talent.

This is our kind of protest. Measured in applause, not outrage. Carried by verse, not violence.

What began as a flicker is now a fire. We’ve earned awards, filled theatres, and built community—but more importantly, we’ve stayed true. To our mission. To each other. To the artists still waiting in the wings.
Because Chisaina Arts isn’t defined by the spotlight. We’re defined by the stories that lead up to it.
And so, we keep telling them.
